Many young golfers get their start in the sport thanks to a parent who loves to play. The same can be said for Cascia Hall sophomore Coleman Sides.
Last season as a freshman, Sides won the Class 5A state title with three rounds of 71, 70, and 70. It’s not rare for underclassmen to play as good as someone like Sides. Many grow up playing the sport and competing at a young level.
“My family has always played golf and I started playing as soon as I could hold a club and immediately fell in love with the game. My dad was the main person to get me out on the course and playing at an early age. Also, my brother, William, was the one who got me most into the sport since I aspired to be as good as him ever since I was little,” said Sides.
Sides won many U.S. Kids events in the area, and it didn’t take long for him to realize golf is the sport for him as success continues to follow.
“It’s meant everything to me. It showed that my hard work has been paying off and that I just need to continue with what I am doing to prepare myself for future tournaments,” said Sides.
Inspiration comes in many forms and for Sides, he looks to family for that extra push.
“Mainly my brother William. He is playing in college currently and has inspired me to work hard and set high goals. I have had such great experiences going to his tournaments including nationals and many other great amateur tournaments and I hope I will be able to follow in his shoes one day,” said Sides.
In golf, there is always room for improvement. Sides continues to work on his game which will also help the Cascia Hall team find success this season as well.
“I have mainly worked on short game because it is one part of the game where you can always be improving and also is critical to win tournaments. I have also been working on having a more easy and repetitive swing that I can count on in competitive play,” said Sides. “I think we have a really great chance at repeating as state champions this year is we continue to grind. We have many of our top players back and new players coming into the program to compete. Coach Rahilly is building a special program at Cascia and it’s an honor to be a part of his team.”
