Teacher Spotlight Jacqueline Pope, Owasso Public Schools
Owasso Public Schools teacher Jacqueline Pope started teaching just a few short years ago and remains at that location today. Pope is teaching kids how to be safe when online.
“I started teaching in 2021 at Barnes Elementary in Owasso, OK. Before that, I worked as a substitute teacher for our district,” Pope said. “I teach computer science to Kindergarten through 5th grade. I work on helping kids with things like using a mouse and keyboard, coding, problem-solving, and staying safe online.”
School was more than just a place of learning for Pope when she was growing up and creating that environment for her students is a driving force behind her success.
“Growing up, the school was more than just a place to learn it was a safe haven. It gave me and so many other kids shelter, food, and a sense of security when life at home was tough. The teachers and staff there made such a big impact, and it really stuck with me how much of a difference they made,” Pope said. “That’s when I knew I wanted to be part of that kind of team. Schools have such a huge role in shaping kids’ lives, and I wanted to be someone who could help make school a safe, supportive place for every student.”
“ ”Pope also coaches the school’s robotics team, where students design and build a LEGO robot, then code the robot to complete a mission on a course.
“We compete against other schools in Oklahoma. This is my fourth year coaching. I also host a running club for students. This year, I’m especially excited because we’re inviting parents to join in, and we’re planning to complete a local charity 5K together,” said Pope.
Serving as an educator is something Pope was born to do. Her passion and love for teaching is obvious.
“What I love most about this job is getting to work with my students and seeing their excitement as they learn and grow. I love the fast pace of being an elective teacher and seeing every student in my school. The best part is the fun we have every day. You just can’t have a bad day while around the sweet smiles and love from your students,” said Pope.
Pope is currently working on her master’s degree and plans to complete it in 2025.
