Sapulpa’s Jack Madden – Presented by Connect DME

By Ivy Knapp

For Sapulpa junior Jack Madden, wrestling isn’t just a sport, it’s a lifestyle that he’s been passionate about for years. Now in the 11th grade, Jack has already put six years into the sport, and the journey started because of someone close to him.

“I’ve been wrestling for six years, and my dad got me into it,” he says.

That early push has led to a passion that now defines who he is both on and off the mat.

Jack’s favorite part of wrestling is straightforward. He wants to win. That competitive spirit shows in everything he does, whether it’s his training habits, how he prepares for matches, or the goals he’s set for himself this season. He wants one thing and that’s to win.

But the path hasn’t been without challenges. When asked about the hardest part of wrestling, Jack doesn’t downplay it.

“Losing weight is the hardest.” Jack said.

Managing weight classes is something every wrestler deals with, but it takes a special level of discipline to handle it week after week. Jack knows exactly how tough it can be, which is why he appreciates the work that goes into the sport.

“People don’t realize how hard it really is. How much extra work is put into it,” he says.

Before every match, Jack has a routine that helps him get mentally locked in.                                                            “I listen to music and pray before the match.” He also preps physically before each match.                                   “I jump rope, and sprint.” Jack said.

These routines help him settle into the mindset he needs to compete.

Jack has a favorite memory that still motivates him now and that was placing at state. It’s a moment he’s proud of, but also one he wants to build on as he keeps working toward bigger goals. He credits Shea Conley as a big part of his success as a wrestler. Jack says Shea has had the biggest impact on him as a wrestler.

Jack always tries his best at every competition. He stays focused by relying on what he calls his endless work ethic. That attitude shows up not only in wrestling, but in the classroom too. Balancing academics and athletics aren’t easy.                                                                                   “I stay focused and get done what needs to get done.” Jack said.

Tough losses happen, but Jack remains optimistic. His approach is to remain focused and consistent.

“Stay locked in and win the next,” Jack said.

For younger wrestlers looking up to him, Jack has a message to them.                                                                  “Go be great, and hard work pays off.”

After high school, Jack plans to continue his wrestling journey and compete at the next level in college.
