When Catoosa’s flag football team first took the field, it marked the launch of the school’s first-ever program of its kind. Formed in response to Tulsa Public Schools’ new league, the Indians seized the opportunity to usher in a new era of athletic opportunity for female athletes.

The moment the idea was approved, assistant head varsity football coach and offensive coordinator Joe Brown knew he wanted to be part of it.

“Once I heard we were forming a flag football team, I got excited because of my connection with the girls from the Girls’ Sports Performance class. Some of those girls could really be talented, and I felt I could build a solid program.”

Taking on the role of the team’s head coach, Brown began recruiting athletes and encouraging them to discover their place in the program.

“Being able to attend practice after other sports session showed that it mattered to them and that they would put in strong effort. These qualities translate to good football players,” explained Brown, who has more than 20 years of coaching experience.

Brown described the girls who joined the inaugural team as pioneers, learning as they go, competing fearlessly and proving that effort can bridge any gap in experience.

“They consistently show up, listen, and work hard to improve every day. It was a blank slate for them. They have adapted to the system very quickly and are improving every day.”

Their rapid understanding of the game has impressed Brown, from lining up correctly to executing their base offense and defense. While mistakes are inevitable, the team’s culture promotes resilience and unity.

“I see a culture of showing up even after they’ve already been through basketball, wrestling, or cheerleading practice. The girls don’t point fingers at each other but take ownership of their mistakes.”

As the season unfolds, Brown said the team’s commitment and attitude are setting a tone for success. With only one senior and a roster full of underclassmen, the future of flag football at Catoosa is just beginning.
