Emily Whitten

Oologah High School

A two-sport student-athlete for Oologah High School, volleyball has become the focus for Emily Whitten who is now in the middle of the season. Whitten said the team continues to improve and play really well.

“The positive things I see this year from my teammates is how well we are at building one another up and pushing through in mentally hard times,” said Whitten. “Oologah is a great place for me, because of the way we are built as a family more than a school and each person here is very supportive and willing to help me achieve my goals. Whether that is getting help from my friends or asking a peer/teacher to come support my game I know they will always be there.”

Whitten started playing volleyball while still in elementary school and said she knew this was something she wanted to compete in for as long as possible.

“I started playing volleyball in sixth grade, I knew it was my sport when I instantly wanted to learn more and grow. I do play tennis with my school, but my focus is more towards volleyball,” said Whitten.

To compete at the varsity level, it takes a dedication to the sport and a willingness to work hard to improve. Whitten has shown she has a strong work ethic. Something she credits her family for helping to develop.

“My work ethic comes from my biggest role models, my brother, and my parents. My brother pushes me to be better than my past days and to keep a good attitude with anyone and everyone. This comes from the fellowship of my parents showing us how to handle any situation,” said Whitten. “My brother has made a huge impact in my life he has always been there for me and guided me along the way. Whether he is helping me with volleyball or just pouring into me he is truly the best! He has always been there with an open heart.”

Whitten is team focused and loves being around her teammates on and off the court.

“The thing I love the most about my teammates at Oologah is the bond and the will to work for one another is very high. Each player doesn’t matter how close you are to them. They are always willing to help you or be there for you,” said Whitten. “My dream scenario this year would be to build as one unit and to be able to go and win state!”

Aside from practice and matches, Whitten said she has a few things she enjoys outside of volleyball.

“I love spending time with my family and hanging out with my close friends. Playing pickle ball or going to make Sonic runs, but just spending time and being able to relax with them is what I love.”

Whitten would like to attend college and pursue a degree in sports management after high school.
