Talking Softball with Collinsville’s Emma Helm – Presented by Rib Crib

VYPE: Emma, what grade are you in this year and what position do you play for the softball team?
Emma Helm: I am currently a junior. It’s an exciting year because I’m starting to think more about my future, while also appreciating the time I still have left in high school. I play both pitcher and third base. I love being involved in those positions because they both come with a lot of responsibility, and I enjoy being right in the middle of the action.

VYPE: When did you first start playing softball?
EH: I started playing softball when I was five years old and have loved it ever since. The game has taught me so much about teamwork, perseverance, and believing in myself. It’s become such a big part of who I am.

VYPE: What do you love most about your team and teammates at Collinsville?
EH: What I love most about my team is how close we all are. Everyone is so genuine with one another, and it feels like we’re more of a family than just teammates. We always support and encourage each other, whether we’re on the field or off, and that bond makes the game even more meaningful.

VYPE: What’s been your biggest surprise this season?
EH: The biggest surprise this season was breaking out in hives during practice, it was definitely unexpected! Even though it caught me off guard, it reminded me that sometimes things happen that you can’t control, and you just have to push through and stay focused on what you love.

VYPE: Who inspires you? Explain.
EH: My mom and my sisters inspire me every day. They push me to be a better person in all aspects of life and encourage me to overcome challenges with strength and determination. Watching how hard they work and how much they care about others makes me want to follow their example and never give up on my goals.

VYPE: Favorite subject in school and favorite teacher from any grade?
EH: My favorite subject is science because I enjoy learning how the world works and how things connect in ways we don’t always notice. As for teachers, Mrs. Green and Mrs. Brinson have always stood out as some of my favorites. They both made learning fun, while also pushing me to do my best, which left a lasting impact on me.

VYPE: What other clubs or groups do you belong to at school?
EH: I am involved in Student Council as well as the National Honor Society. Both groups have given me opportunities to grow as a leader, give back to my school and community, and connect with people outside of softball.

VYPE: What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
EH: In my free time, I enjoy spending quality time with my family and friends. Whether we’re hanging out at home, going to events, or just laughing together, those moments are always special to me. They help me recharge and remind me what’s most important.

VYPE: What would you like to do after you graduate?
EH: After graduation, I plan to attend medical school and pursue a career in anesthesiology. I’ve always been interested in the medical field, and I want to be able to help people in a meaningful way. My goal is to combine my love for science with my passion for caring for others.
