Joaquin Flores still remembers the moment that defined his high school soccer career: scoring the game-winning goal in the 2025 state final for Booker T. Washington High School.
Now a senior center attacking midfielder for the Hornets, Flores has become a cornerstone of the varsity soccer program, blending skill and leadership in the heart of the midfield.
“My most memorable moment was scoring the game-winning goal in the state final in 2025,” Flores said.
That championship moment represents more than just athletic achievement for Flores. It embodies a philosophy he’s carried throughout his athletic journey.
“Sports has taught me nothing good comes easily,” he said.
Flores’ passion for soccer traces back to elementary school, where a teacher recognized and nurtured his love for the game. Ms. Merino, his third-grade teacher from Madrid, Spain, provided early encouragement that left a lasting impression.
“She would always be excited to talk to me about soccer, and she’s from Madrid, so I used to draw the logo of Madrid and give her them and she’d hang them up,” Flores said. “She even framed one in her house.”
Like many young players, Flores looks to professional stars for inspiration. He cites Cristiano Ronaldo as his role model, admiring qualities that extend beyond the pitch.
“Cristiano Ronaldo inspires me, he’s such a good idol for young men,” Flores said. “Hard working, eats clean, charitable, and amazing at his sport.”
Beyond individual accolades, Flores values the relationships forged through team sports. He highlighted teammate Isaac Fasesin as someone who exemplifies the positive culture within the Hornets program.
“Possibly the nicest human being on the planet, never says a bad thing about anybody and is always so expressive in how thankful or grateful he is,” Flores said. “Super respectful as well.”
As he prepares for his final season with Booker T. Washington, Flores carries advice that has shaped his competitive mindset: “If you don’t believe you are the best, you’ll never achieve all that you are capable of.”
