The Fellowship of Christian Athletes has a presence in many schools across Oklahoma. Daniel Webster High School is no different.

David Jackson, a teacher at Webster High School, said two students led the effort to get the FCA chapter approved. Once they had the green light, the chapter has taken off and is doing very well.

“With Dominick and Jairus, they help advertise and promote the meetings by hanging fliers and talking it up among their friends. They emailed the principal and obtained her approval for the meeting to start FCA at Webster. Jairus, Dominick and other students who have a relationship with Jesus and attend Webster and FCA meetings are involved in the gardening process of growing the Kingdom of God. They are planting seeds, tending the garden and helping to produce a harvest,” said Jackson.

Jairus McMahan is in his junior year and plays golf for the Warriors. McMahan said the FCA chapter is helping him grow as a student and as a person.

“FCA has helped me grow a bit more out of my shell and has made me more friends.”

Jackson is a firm believer in the power of the program and what it can do for a school’s population.

“When you talk about bringing a Christian club or organization into a public school, it is sometimes difficult to accurately measure the impact. Immediately, it gave students hope that someone would invest time, resources and food to give them a place to meet and talk about Jesus,” Jackson said. “An upgrade to their lunch is a big deal when the school food is less than marketable in the minds of the students.”

Student led mentoring and sharing their personal experience fuels the program and gives the students a place where they can express some of the issues they face and how to face them.

“If a student is walking or experiencing some kind of darkness in their life, a less that perfect person can carry the light of Jesus into their day and have immediate impact; just because light is undefeated against darkness. Having a place and space where students are reminded that they are “the light of the world” helps impact a whole school,” said Jackson.
