2024 Union Redhawks Football Preview – Presented by Josh Moore – Shelter Insurance

UNION REDHAWKS

Coach: KIRK FRIDRICH

10-2

OFFENSE

We’ve come to expect the Redhawks to be in the contender conversation for more than two decades. The same conversation applies to the Redhawks coming into the 2024 season. Head coach Kirk Fridrich returns a number of two and three-year starters on both sides of the ball, including one of the top quarterbacks in the state in Shaker Reisig (6-2, 200, Sr.). A VYPE Top 100 selectee, Reisig is a next-level QB who sees the field extremely well, and is athletic enough to get himself out of trouble and make positive yards downfield. Reisig has several targets in the passing game that includes WR Boston Carrasco (5-11, 170, Sr.) and tight end Myles Davis (6-2, 215, Sr.). Both players give Reisig consistent targets downfield, but the Redhawk offense is not dependent on the passing game. Jordan Schelling (6-2, 205, Sr.) is the type of running back that gets better with more carries. Schelling will benefit from having an offensive line that features Jesse Jones Jr. (6-3, 290, Sr.) and Kris Mendenhall (6-5, 280, Sr.). Also look for Tayveon Parry (Jr.) at running back and Stone Turner (Jr.) at wide receiver. The offensive coaching staff includes Jonny Ulibarri (OC), Dub Maddox (QB), Brandon Golphin (RB), Spencer Carroll (WR), Tristan Ridenour (WR), Jonny Ulibarri (TE), and Danny Smith (OL).

DEFENSE

With only three returning starters on defense, Defensive Coordinator Nathan Foster had plenty of holes to fill during spring ball. The secondary will feature J.T. Fridrich (6-1, 172, Sr.), a three-year starter and one of the leaders on defense for the Redhawks. Look for guys like Fridrich and fellow DB Ashton Cunningham (5-10, 160, Sr.) to bring leadership to the defense and help younger players mature into their starting roles. Jackson Franklin (Sr.), Daijon Gaines (Jr.), Tayveon Parry (Jr.), and Noah Gillespie (So.) are expected to help in the secondary. Tucker Koch (6-0, 210, Jr.) is a two-year starter at linebacker where D.J. Strother (Sr.) will join him after a promising spring. Schelling may see time at LB as well.

“Really excited about the development of our linemen during the offseason. Our team is stronger than we have been in the past and the guys are practicing with lots of confidence. We lost a great senior class from 2023, but I look forward to watching the pieces fall in place over the summer and preseason. This senior class has been tested and has shown a strong resilience the past two seasons, we expect their leadership to have a big impact on our team’s development moving into the season and playoffs for 2024,” said Fridrich. Josiah Hammons (Sr.) will anchor the defensive line. The defensive coaching staff includes Victor Redd (S), Luke Snider (CB), Nathan Foster (LB), Jonathan Brown (DL), and special team’s coordinator Jon Davis.
