VYPE: Why did you get into cheerleading and how long have you been involved?
Faith Byrom: I have been a cheerleader for 13 years. I started at four through my dance studio, then started doing All-Star and most recently added sideline cheer. Cheer has been something I’ve loved for as long as I can remember.
VYPE: What is your favorite part of cheerleading, and what skills are you most proud of?
FB: My favorite part of cheerleading is flying. I love the feeling of weightlessness and feeling like I’m actually flying. I’m currently learning to base, and that brings a different sense of accomplishment.
VYPE: How do you handle the physical and mental demands of being a cheerleader?
FB: Cheer has always been my primary activity, but I still make time for my family and friends. Physically, I try to always do my best, so I don’t get injured, but that’s part of any sport.
VYPE: What’s your favorite ways to build team spirit and promote positive relationships?
FB: To build team spirit, I believe you must encourage others in what they’re trying to achieve, always stay positive, and lead by example.
VYPE: What job do you have on the cheer squad?
FB: A cheerleader needs to be flexible and help their team wherever they’re needed. For All-Star, I’m learning to base and mat talk is huge! For sideline, it’s important to stay upbeat, positive, and encouraging even if we’re losing.
VYPE: What are your goals in cheerleading, and how do you plan to achieve them?
FB: When I was younger, I wanted to cheer in the Olympics, but that’s every little girl’s dream. For me, I can see myself teaching in a gym or maybe even owning one someday. Right now, I just want to keep improving with practice and help whatever team I’m on.
VYPE: What teammate do you look up to or what former teammate left an impression on you?
FB: I had a teammate who was my “big sis.” To me, she was the best. I loved her tumbling and flying, and I wanted to be like her. She went on to cheer in college, and I thought that was amazing.
VYPE: What makes being a student-athlete at Glenpool special for you?
FB: Cheering for Glenpool has been very special to me. I had never cheered on a school team before, and I didn’t know anyone at first, but they took me in so easily. I love my coach. My coach is like another mom. Also I’ve made friends that I know will last a lifetime.
VYPE: What are your greatest strengths as a cheerleader, and what are your plans for after you graduate?
FB: I’m physically strong and have a positive mindset, so I believe it’s possible to do anything. After graduation, I hope to cheer in college or on an All-Star team. I love the physical challenge and the ability to compete.
