It takes hard work and sacrifice to be a varsity player. McKenzie Niehus is a senior infielder at Berryhill High School is no stranger to hard work. Niehus got her start in the sport at a very young age.
“I started playing softball during tee-ball when I was around four years old. I grew to love the game the older I got,” said Niehus. “Softball is the sport I focus on the most, but I also run track for my school.”
Niehus said there are many positives playing for BHS and the team continues to work hard and improve.
“Positives from the team is having a never quit attitude and being team players. We constantly are lifting each other up for the next play,” said Niehus. “What I love most about my teammates is how close we are as a group and could go to anyone if we ever needed anything.”
School and community support never wavers in Berryhill. A fact not lost on Niehus and her teammates.
“Berryhill is a small school where all of the teachers and faculty are very supportive,” Niehus said.
Her strong work ethic comes from her family and it’s something she hopes translates to the field and the softball team.
“I believe my work ethic comes from my parents and coaches pushing me to be the best I can. My dad has always made a big impact on my life on the softball field and also off always being one of my biggest supporters,” said Niehus.
Away from the field, Niehus said she likes to hang out with friends and family while going to the lake in the summer. Her future plans include attending the University of Central Oklahoma while continuing to play softball at the next level.
