VYPE: Aiyana, what age did you start your wrestling journey?

Aiyana Perkins: I started wrestling when I was 13 years old.

VYPE: What other clubs or groups are you involved with at school?

AP: I’m involved in broadcasting and leadership at school.

VYPE: What are your strengths on the mat and what did you improve on the most this season?

AP: My strength is definitely my mental toughness and work ethic. This season, I’ve improved most in my confidence and mat awareness.

VYPE: What was a highlight for you this season?

AP: My highlight this season was winning my first state title after being a two-time runner-up.

VYPE: What’s your biggest challenge as a student-athlete?

AP: My biggest challenge as a student-athlete is balancing school, wrestling, and traveling, especially while trying to keep up with assignments and rest.

VYPE: What does all the support you get mean to you?

AP: The support from my family, coaches, and friends means everything to me. It keeps me going on hard days and reminds me why I do what I do.

VYPE: How do you mentally prepare for competition?

AP: I mentally prepare by visualizing my matches, staying calm through music, and reminding myself of the work I’ve put in.

VYPE: What do you love most about your teammates?

AP: What I love most about my teammates is that we’re like family we push each other, lift each other up, and always have each other’s backs.

VYPE: What are your plans after you graduate?

AP: After high school, I’m going to wrestle in college at the University of Saint Mary and work toward becoming a teacher and coach.

VYPE: Who inspires you?

AP: My mom inspires me the most. She’s been through so much, and she’s always taught me to be strong and keep going no matter what.

VYPE: What accomplishment are you most proud of at a student-athlete?

AP: I’m most proud of winning state this year after all the setbacks I’ve faced. It was a big moment for me.
