Bixby’s Grant Nelson
When the Spartans of Bixby High School take the pitch, one player to watch at right back and center mid is Grant Nelson.
Only a sophomore, Nelson has shown a high skill level and the ability to get to the ball and make plays. Since kindergarten, Nelson has called the soccer field his second home. Also, a club player, the sophomore has developed into an outstanding player for the Spartans.
“I think my strength is having good touch on the ball, and I’ve improved on playing quicker,” said Nelson.
Nelson said being around is teammates is great thanks to their humor and how supportive they are of each other. Nelson said being a Spartan is about more than just wins and losses.
“What makes being a student-athlete great are the resources and coaches are good,” said Nelson.
One teammate who has impressed Nelson this season is Johan Mendez.
“The teammate who has impressed me the most this year is Johan Mendez. He is an amazing dribbler,” said Nelson.
Playing soccer is more than just an extracurricular activity for Nelson, it’s a lifestyle. His goal is to play at the next level before turning pro. Nelson said he is inspired by one of his coaches.
“Coach Whitham my Bixby soccer coach because he works hard and is disciplined. He wants the best for us,” said Nelson.
