Cheerleading has been at the forefront of Katie Barnes’ life for nearly a decade. The Bixby senior began cheering in the 3rd grade, and now as she embarks on her last year in high school, she recognizes the key moments that have shaped her life.
“I’d say I lead by example,” says Barnes. “I always try to push myself to work hard, stay positive, and encourage my teammates through my actions.”
While many still underestimate the sport, Barnes points out just how much cheer demands. “It takes strength, endurance, and focus just like any other sport, and it’s so much more than cheering on the sidelines,” she adds.
Barnes finds the most excitement in the tumbling portion of a cheer routine. The adrenaline rush is her favorite part, and mastering her full stands out as one of the skills she’s most proud of accomplishing.
“It took time, determination, and consistency, but it’s been worth it,” she reflects.
Overcoming an injury to her ankle has proven to be the most challenging aspect of her student-athlete career yet.
“Having to relearn my full after that injury was tough, but it taught me patience and perseverance,” she recalls. “Staying motivated and focused through that process was a test of mental strength.”
One of the most unforgettable moments came during the 2024 championship win over Owasso.
“The energy was unmatched, and when the game went into overtime tied, the atmosphere was electric,” Barnes recalls. “When Bixby came out on top, it was an unforgettable moment to celebrate with the team and community.”
With the perspective only years of dedication can bring, Barnes is more than prepared for the next chapter. Cheerleading has tested her, shaped her, and taught her resilience — lessons she’ll carry with her as she moves forward.
“To me, mental toughness means pushing through even when things feel impossible,” Barnes says. “No matter what obstacles I face, I’ve learned I can push through and keep improving.”
