Nearing the end of her high school journey, Broken Arrow senior Hayley Smith is savoring every moment in the pool, embracing the sport that has given her confidence through faith and determination.
With six years of swimming under her belt, Smith admitted that her love for the water took time to grow.
“At first, I wasn’t very interested in the sport,” she said, “But my mom and grandpa convinced me to start swimming, and ever since then I’ve loved it!”
Now, Smith shares a bond with her teammates that has built a sense of family, turning every practice and meet into a shared experience.
“Our team is so close,” Smith reflected. “Everyone is so encouraging towards one another.”
Along with the support of the tight-knit community, Smith has seen tremendous growth through swimming. One of her proudest accomplishments is her overall progress, which not only shaped her abilities in the pool, but also her character outside of it.
“I have come so far as not only an athlete but as a person,” she said.
Smith revealed that much of her progress stems from her steadfast faith, which serves as a guiding anchor, keeping her grounded amid the pressures of competition.
“Before all of my races, when I’m behind the block waiting for my heat, I pray,” recalled Smith, who said it isn’t about winning or losing, but finishing the race with peace no matter the outcome.
Her faith has also helped her navigate the mental challenges that accompany any sport and paired with the solid support of her teammates and coaches, Smith has learned to push through doubt and approach each meet with confidence.
“Sometimes in practice or at a meet, I might think I’m not good enough to do something,” she explained. “But I know that if I give my all, my coaches will be proud, and my teammates will be there to support me.”
Over the years, she has set goals not just for herself, but for her team, striving to improve her times, perform well in relays, and help as many teammates as possible reach state.
“I want to thank my coaches for everything they do for us,” Smith said. “I am so thankful to be a part of this team, and I’m even more thankful for all the opportunities they have given me.”
Her gratitude reflects the foundation of faith, teamwork, and support that has carried her through her high school swimming career.
