The first sport Avery Allen loved was Basketball. It brings her joy, teaches her mental strength and has shaped her into the person she is today.
Allen is a freshman at Glenpool High School. She enjoys the leadership role of representing GHS and is learning valuable life lessons from playing basketball.
“As I start my high school career, I would like younger kids to look up to me in a good way, knowing that I’m setting a good example and being a good role model representing my school, coaches and my community,” said Allen. “I’ve learned to keep my composure in my everyday life and never get too high in the highs and never too low in the lows, because anything could change at any time, just like in a basketball game.”
The friendships made with others involved in the game are an important part of being on a team. Tyra McKinnie is a teammate who has left the biggest impression on her.
“Tyra is such a good role model and inspires me to be more like her. Plus, she always finds me on the three-point line!” Allen exclaimed.
Allen is inspired by how her parents care for her and her brother. She wants them to know how thankful she is for everything they have done to help her continue playing basketball. She also gives thanks to God.
“I always thank God for where I am because without Him, I couldn’t be who I am,” she said.
Allen loves visiting different cities. Playing on her AAU team allowed her to combine her love of the city with her love of basketball. Her team played in Chicago, where they won the national championship.
“During those games we fought through so many obstacles but as a team we stayed composed and finished strong!” saying additionally, “I love the city, so that was a super fun trip for me getting to see all around Chicago and eating some great food!”
Allen loves being outdoors, walking her dogs, riding bikes and playing football catch with her brother. While not an outdoor activity, shopping is high on the list of favorite things to do.
