Anyone around softball in Oklahoma has heard the name Kammie Smith. Now a senior at Kiefer High School, Smith has embraced the opportunity to help her team to the state tournament before she leaves for the friendly campus of Wichita State University. Smith said she’s excited to see what the additions to the team can do.
“I am looking forward to seeing how well our new freshman can compete. We lost eight seniors, so seeing how well our new freshmen can fill in the spots is something I am looking forward to,” said Smith. “It has been my dream since I was little and I’m getting the chance to go play at Wichita State University!”
During her career, Smith has posted numbers that are off the charts. In three years while playing shortstop, Smith has made six errors with four of those coming her freshman season. Another jaw dropping stat is she’s only struck out three times. Smith has always hit .500 or better with her best average being .595.
The support the softball team has at Kiefer fuels the team to perform. Smith said it’s a big reason they love to go out and play hard.
“The support at Kiefer and that we have as a team is amazing. It doesn’t matter what sport it is, there is support from everyone. It means everything when students and fans come out to our games, it’s motivating. When we have a bunch of people there to watch it’s an amazing feeling and makes a win feel even better,” said Smith.
As a student-athlete, Smith said KHS is a great place and she can’t imagine going anywhere else.
“It makes it a great place for me personally because everyone knows everyone, so everyone knows what’s going on in the classroom and out. Whether you have a game or just played one, our teachers are always asking how we did or telling us good luck and I don’t feel you get that anywhere else. Our softball program is really good and so is our school, so getting to be a student-athlete at Kiefer really is awesome,” said Smith.
Smith said the dream scenario this season is to go undefeated and win state. To do that Smith knows stepping up into a larger leadership role is important.
“I would say I have always been a leader in some type of way but in the past, we have had great leadership with the seniors we just lost so, I would say I have stepped up more as being a leader this year and it has been good.”
Away from school, Smith said she enjoys spending time with friends, hunting, fishing, and reading the Bible.
