VYPE: What first drew you to tennis?
Karlie Jones: I started playing tennis about four years ago after my teacher, who was also the tennis coach at the time, encouraged me to try it. I’m really glad I did because it quickly became something I love and am passionate about.
VYPE: What grade are you in, and what do you enjoy most about representing your school?
KJ: I’m a senior at Lincoln Christian School. What I enjoy most about representing my school is getting to be part of a team and competing for something bigger than just myself.
VYPE: What position or role do you usually play?
KJ: I primarily play doubles. I really enjoy having a teammate I can work with on the court, and I like the communication and teamwork that comes with it.

VYPE: How do you prepare mentally before a big match?
KJ: Before a big match, I focus on staying positive and not letting negative thoughts take over. I also try to relax, have fun, and enjoy the moment with my teammate so I don’t put too much pressure on myself.
VYPE: What has been your favorite memory in tennis so far?
KJ: My favorite moment was our final match at state last season when my teammate and I won and made it onto the podium. It was such a rewarding experience after all the hard work we put in.
VYPE: Who has had the biggest impact on your tennis journey?
KJ: Coach Barrett has had the biggest impact on me because he truly believes in us and constantly pushes us to be our best.
VYPE: How do you balance school and athletics?
KJ: School always comes first, but I also make sure I’m fully committed to tennis and putting in the work it takes.
VYPE: What is one of the biggest lessons tennis has taught you?
KJ: One of the biggest lessons tennis has taught me is to never give up and to always work hard, even when things aren’t going my way.
VYPE: What advice would you give to younger players?
KJ: I would tell younger players to always stay positive and encourage their teammates. Tennis is a very mental sport, so having a good attitude can make a big difference.
