Q&A with Sand Springs’ Skylir Turnage
By Elizabeth Contreras
VYPE: What grade are you in, and how long have you been cheering?
Skylir Turnage: I am in 12th grade, and I’ve been cheering for five years.
VYPE: What originally got you interested in cheerleading, was it the excitement of performing, the chance to be part of a close-knit team, or something else that drew you to the sport?
ST: I liked the idea of being able to represent the Sandites in a positive way.
VYPE: What do you enjoy most about being a cheerleader?
ST: The aspect of cheerleading that I enjoy the most is the family that it has provided me with and the positive energy that I get to experience every single day.
VYPE: What has been your favorite memory with your cheer team at Charles Page so far?
ST: My favorite memory with the cheer squad has definitely been our sleepover at Tori’s house. That night we made lots of memories.
VYPE: Have you had someone on the team or a mentor who inspires you to push harder or stay optimistic, even during challenges?
ST: My biggest role model has been my older friend Payton Stewart, who graduated last year.
VYPE: Are there nerves before a performance, tough stunts, or something else that you find difficult, and what strategies help you push through it?
ST: The most challenging thing is the nerves before performing, and I overcome them by listening to music and being confident in myself.
VYPE: Do you have a favorite stunt, tumble, or part of a routine?
ST: My favorite part of cheer is tumbling. My favorite pass is a handspring tuck.
VYPE: How do you motivate your teammates or bring energy to the squad?
ST: I am just myself and I try to make people laugh.
VYPE: Do you have a favorite quote, motto, or piece of advice that inspires you in cheer?
ST: My favorite quote is “Be where your feet are.”
VYPE: Is there a single word that captures all the emotions, teamwork, and energy you’ve experienced over the years?
ST: If I could describe my cheer experience in one word it would be “spirited.” No matter what your intentions are, just being a cheerleader means you’re always spirited and joyful.
