Sand Springs’ Shelby Schuler

In Shelby Schuler’s family, athletics are a staple.

“My favorite teams are Oklahoma in college and the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL — same for my dad and brother,” the Sand Springs High School sophomore said. “My mom likes Oklahoma State, Notre Dame and the Dallas Cowboys.”

So after Schuler’s fourth birthday, it was natural that another who shared her genes urged her to pick up a ball and bat.

“My softball career began when I was four, and my grandma is the person who wanted me to play,” Schuler said. “My dad played football, and my mom played softball. My brother was in football and wrestling.”

Where her family’s love of watching sports converge is college softball — and, of course, Schuler’s varsity games for the Sandites, where she stars “anywhere in the outfield.”

“It’s important to me because sports have brought my family together by cheering each other on,” Schuler said.

It was also natural that, once her softball career began, Schuler “instantly” fell in love with the game.
“I’ve learned that work pays off, and that if you put the time into it, you will get a better outcome,” Schuler said.

That work is especially important when, like any baseball or softball player, Schuler finds herself in a hole.

“Anytime I get into a hitting slump, I overcome it by hitting every day until I start hitting in a game again,” Schuler said. “One thing about me is that I never give up, and I just keep trying until I get it right.”

Schuler will carry that mindset onto the diamond this year as the Sandites look to make a postseason push. Her goals include hitting a home run and pumping her relentless energy into her team.

“My long-term goals are making a college softball team, becoming a teacher and being the best person I can be,” Schuler said.
