Sapulpa’s Brody Hensley & Baylea Henderson

The drum major is at the forefront of a marching band. Two individuals holding this role for the Sapulpa High School band are Brody Hensley, a junior who plays trumpet and Baylea Henderson, a sophomore who plays the clarinet. These gifted musicians are leaders with the communication skills needed to direct the band through challenging marching formations.

Brody and Baylea joined band in the fifth grade. Looking up to family members involved in band was a major influence for them to play an instrument. It is the best decision she has ever made, says Baylea.

Band has given Brody perseverance and a strong work ethic.

“There is so much to achieve and so many opportunities to grow as a person,” he says.

The camaraderie is what Baylea loves most about being in band.

“Leading the band and watching our conjoined efforts go towards putting together an awesome marching show is the best feeling in the world.”

Previous SHS drum majors influenced Brody and Baylea. For Brody, last year’s drum major, Kate Bryant, is also his best friend.

“She taught me so much about self-worth and confidence and is always there for me.”

Tessa Arnold made Baylea feel welcome from the very start and set a good example.

“Tessa helped me step into my own role as drum major and continues to guide and support me today,” she said.

Brody and Baylea proudly represent their school.

“I get to show people how incredible our program is by exemplifying our standards and values,” says Brody.

Baylea sees the opportunity to give back to the program she has grown to love.

“Leading the band allows me to represent my school with pride and leave a positive impact on the program for future members. I am so excited that I get to contribute to this legacy.”

Brody aspires to be the kind of person his mom is. Baylea’s inspiration is her cousin Abigail Tanner, a former SHS drum major.

“She is an extremely talented musician and teacher who has guided me throughout my entire band career,” says Baylea.

Both Brody and Baylea are National Honor Society members with aspirations to pursue higher education degrees.
