Tulsa Union’s Daijon Gaines

Today’s student-athlete must balance a demanding athletic schedule, schoolwork and find the time for a part time job or spending time with friends and family. For Union High School’s Daijon Gaines, enjoying the upcoming season and being with family are the top two priorities.

“Something I’m looking forward to this season is to just have fun,” Gaines said. “Do as much as I can with family and friends before I go to college in January.”

The safety/wide receiver has become a leader for the Redhawks and is ready to leave a legacy for future generations to follow. Gaines has been called the spiritual leader of the team.

“Being a spiritual leader to me means spreading positivity and making sure everyone’s head is on the same level,” said Gaines.

Academics are just as important according to the senior. From making good grades for college to enjoying his favorite subject, Gaines said he enjoys being in the classroom and keeping up his grades.

“Academics are very important. I have a 3.6 GPA and I really enjoy history. My favorite teacher is definitely my history teacher,” said Gaines.

Gaines said the Union family is special because everyone cares about you as a person. He said the best advice he’s received has come from one of his coaches.

“I’d definitely say my old coach, Howard Scarborough, he’s always showing me the way of life inside and out and it motivates me to keep going,” said Gaines.
