For Union High School senior tennis player Adolfo Andrade, leadership starts long before the first serve and lasts well after the final point.
Andrade, a varsity standout for the Redhawks, has grown into one of the team’s tone-setters through his work ethic and consistency on and off the court. He sees his impact less in statistics and more in how he lifts those around him.
“I would describe my role as a leader because I bring hard work to the team,” Andrade said. “I encourage my team to be better and help them with anything they need me for in and out the court.”
One of his defining moments came at the state tournament, where he outplayed expectations.
“The memory I’m most proud of is taking the 3rd place at state after being seeded 6th,” Andrade said.
Tennis, he said, has reshaped how he approaches challenges.
“Tennis has taught me leadership and how to control my emotions in and out of the court,” he said.
In the classroom, Andrade points to one teacher who has made a lasting impact.
“My favorite teacher is Mr. Ly because he stands up every day and actually teaches on the board which makes kids want to be there and learn,” Andrade said.
His inspiration comes from even farther away — his father.
“My dad inspires me because even though he’s far away he inspires me to be a better man and be responsible in everything I do,” Andrade said.
He credits his teammates for shaping his journey at Union.
“Every teammate I’ve had has left many impressions on me because we’re all hard workers and leave it all when we step on the court,” he said.
Wearing the Union red means more than just a uniform.
“My favorite part about representing Union High School is the recognition I get from it and that everyone is supportive in every tournament I play,” Andrade said.
He also carries with him advice that guides every match: “Play every point with intention, not emotion.”
Andrade said he is especially grateful for the coaches who believed in him early and stayed in his corner.
“I want to say thank you to Coach Gannon for being supportive every match I play, advices I can take for the future and for believing in me, and I also want to shoutout Coach Williams my first coach I had that made me fall in love with the game,” Andrade said.
