You hear of players who come from athletic families. Tulsa Union senior basketball Jaxson Boyd is among them.
“My parents inspire me because they were both high-level D1 athletes and worked every day to be able to play at the level they played at,” Boyd said.
Boyd is the son of Michael and Jamie Boyd, both of whom also attended and were involved in sports at Union High School. Jaxson’s father, Michael, played golf at the University of Tulsa and played on the PGA Tour after college. His mother, Jamie, played softball and basketball at Nebraska. She is also the sister of Justin Fuente, who played quarterback at Oklahoma and Murray State (in Kentucky), and had two head coaching stints at Memphis and Virginia Tech.
“Since I was very young, my parents have told me that I can only control two things – my attitude and my effort. This quote only gets more real to me the older I get,” the younger Boyd said.
Outside of sports, Boyd, who also runs track at Union, is mostly with his church and youth group.
“I like spending time with my friends and reading the Bible in my free time,” he said.
When he runs track this coming spring, it will only be his second season.
“One of my favorite accomplishments is getting third place at state in the 4 x 800-meter relay (also known as 3,200-meter relay) in my first year of track (as a junior last spring) after joining the team in the last part of track after basketball season,” Boyd said.
He considers all his teammates special.
“I cannot give a shoutout to one certain teammate because every single one of my teammates at Union in the class of 2026 has helped me significantly in my basketball career,” Boyd said. “I have been able to play with them since I was young in school and AAU and have been able to grow a strong bond with all of them as they push me to be my best every day in practices and games.”
His favorite college basketball team is the University of Tulsa, “because that’s where my dad went, and I went to a lot of their games when I was younger and still go to them today,” he said.
His favorite part about representing Union, Boyd said, is “showing that our school plays with our full effort every play, and I represent what a student athlete should look like off the court.
“I’d like to give a special shoutout to my Savior Jesus Christ,” Boyd added. “I owe everything I have to Him and am thankful that He gave me the opportunity to succeed in athletics.”
