This season for the Kelley Comets is about growth. Head coach Sarah Dicks knew coming into the season that the team would need to find an identity and grow as players.
“We are a young roster, but excited to compete and grow this season,” Dicks said. “We graduated some strong senior players last year. Most of my lineup is sophomores, so we are excited to watch their development throughout the season and we are very excited that they are getting experience at the 6A varsity level so early in their high school career.”
For a program with a ton of success, having a season to rebuild and focus on the fundamentals is somewhat unexpected. Anyone close to the program will tell you this group is growing and improving with each match. A positive the coaching staff and the players can hold on to heading into the offseason.
Players like Milee Jackson are more than just a teammate. Jackson continually shows the underclassmen what it takes to be a top-level player. Her leadership as a four-year starter and future DI athlete at the collegiate level has been big for the Comets.
Recent success on the court against Stillwater shines light on the fact that the team is improving and willing to compete through adversity. It took five matches for the Comets to come out on top. With scores of 22-25, 25-16, 25-19, 24-26, and 17-15, the Comets showed they have heart.
“We have really played a lot of close sets! Many of our players are playing in some high-pressure situations for the first time. Milee Jackson, senior Libero has consistently performed well in our backrow. Caroline Cohlmia, Jr. DS has been a calm and steady presence who brings a little bit of experience at the varsity level. Our young players, specifically Kate Moore, sophomore outside hitter, shows optimistic and enthusiastic leadership. I’m looking forward to seeing her and our sophomores as they learn to be leaders and varsity athletes,” said Dicks.
The Comets will finish their last eight regular season games against six ranked opponents, two of which are ranked No. 1 in their class, Broken Arrow (6A), and Mount St. Mary (5A).
