Holland Hall’s Leah Beakey
VYPE: What grade are you in and what position do you play?
Leah Beakey: I am in 12th grade, and I am a guard.
VYPE: When did you start playing basketball?
LB: I started playing basketball in kindergarten!
VYPE: Do you have a favorite place to play, and who has the toughest gym?
LB: One of my favorite places to play is the Cascia Hall gym because it’s always packed for Hall Brawl. The toughest gym to play in is the Deer Creek gym. Since it’s far from home, we often don’t have many supporters, and its large size makes the gym feel really quiet.
VYPE: What part of your game is most improved coming into this season?
LB: My activity on offense has improved the most this season. I’m making more cuts, moving without the ball, and creating opportunities for my teammates to score.
“ ”VYPE:Who inspires you?
LB: My student council advisor, Mrs. Kelly, has been a huge inspiration for me. She leads with an empathetic, action-oriented mindset and has played a major role in my growth throughout high school. Her positivity and thoughtfulness are qualities I hope to continue learning from.
VYPE: What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
LB: In my free time, I love to read, go for runs (especially on trails), and spend time with my friends.
VYPE: What would you like to do after you graduate?
LB: I will be attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to study Global-Public Health. After undergrad, I plan to attend medical school.
VYPE: Who is the greatest basketball player of all time?
LB: For men’s basketball, Michael Jordan is my answer. For women, I think Diana Taurasi holds that title, though in a few years, my pick might be Caitlin Clark.
VYPE: What do you love most about being a student-athlete at Holland Hall?
LB: What I love most is the strong sense of community that comes from being a student-athlete at Holland Hall. My high school experience wouldn’t have been the same without the community I have from both the basketball and cross country programs at Holland Hall.
