Bishop Kelley’s Elijah Horeled – Cross Country Spotlight – Presented by Oklahoma Driving School

By Elizabeth Contreras

Elijah Horeled, a senior at Bishop Kelley High School, was steadily influenced by both his parents’ passion for long-distance running, leading him to pursue the sport himself. Horeled has been running cross country since the 7th grade, and he quickly developed a passion for pushing himself to reach new limits.

“What I like most about competing in cross country is being able to push myself,” says Horeled, reflecting the same determination that defines many of the sport’s successful runners.

Cross country running is an exceptionally demanding sport that requires a combination of stamina, mental endurance, and purposeful skill, all traits Horeled has fine-tuned throughout the years.

Horeled’s favorite course is the state course which holds special memories of pushing limits and achieving success with his teammates.

“My most memorable meet in cross country so far has been the state meet last year,” he continues. “Our team won, and we got to see what we worked for all season come true.”

For Horeled, preparation is about balance. Combining relaxation with focus he and his teammates ground themselves with prayer before competing.

“We also always make sure to pray together right before the race,” he shares.

After last year’s victory, his goal is to build on the success and teamwork they achieved and bring home state yet again. Horeled maintains a steady, team-first approach, reminding himself the importance of putting his best foot forward.

“I stay focused during hard races and workouts because I know that cross country is a team sport,” he says. “We all rely on each other to do our best every day and that keeps me working hard.”

Beyond races and competitions, Horeled values the friendships he has formed through the sport just as much as the victories.

“I really enjoy all the friends I have made,” he shares.

Away from training, he likes spending time with those same friends, often playing basketball or other sports.

Horeled’s approach to preparation and competition is greatly influenced by his coach who provides constant support and guidance throughout his running journey. Head Coach Ryan Smith has been an influential figure for Horeled, supporting his growth and driving his ambitions.

“He is a great coach and is always motivating me to be my best, not just in running, but in life.”

His guidance has instilled discipline, confidence, and the drive to keep improving, lessons that Horeled lives by each day.

With an unfailing diligence, a team-first mindset, and the mentorship of Coach Smith, Elijah Horeled has grown into a dedicated and driven athlete. His passion for the sport, commitment to his teammates, and focus on continual improvement have defined his running journey from the 7th grade to his senior year. As he continues to push his limits on the course, Horeled exemplifies the perseverance, discipline, and spirit that make a true cross country competitor.
