The Dutch varsity football team are off and running as the 2024 season is underway. Going 1-1 in their first two games may not be the start they wanted, but there are many positives players like Kainon Gibson sees in the football team.
“We can learn from your mistakes and take what we did and learn from them and don’t do it again,” said Gibson.
The Top 100 nominee said he started his football journey when he first entered elementary school.
“I started playing football in 1st grade and played up with the 2nd graders. I knew football was the sport for me in sixth grade INFC days and just after that season. We had a really good team, and it was just a lot of fun,” said Gibson.
Now a wide receiver and defensive back for the Dutch, Gibson said he loves being around his teammates and competing on Friday nights.
“I love just being a team and even through the ups and down, we are always still together,” Gibson said. “Holland hall provides the best academics and the best coaches you can have. It’s such a small community so you can meet with coaches whenever during school and talk to teammates all the time.”
There are many reasons Gibson and his teammates are excited for the rest of the season. Playing certain teams like Lincoln Christian give the season a playoff type feel.
“I have the Lincoln game circled for this season. We lost last year to them, but I’d love to play the state champs and beat them,” said Gibson.
One big moment in his career came last season when Gibson made a pick-6 against rival Cascia Hall. The personalities on the team make the tough practices go a lot easier.
“A teammate who keeps my laughing always is Henry Hill, dudes a goofball but is super smart. The most serious on the team is Cole Muir. I never hear him joking around and always locked in,” said Gibson.
Away from school you can usually find Gibson playing golf or watching college football. His goal is to attend college after high school and play football at the next level.
