Metro Christian senior Madeleine Faust has developed into a key contributor for the Patriots’ varsity volleyball team, combining skill, competitiveness and a strong sense of teamwork as she prepares for her final season.
Faust, a 12th grader, credits much of her growth to longtime private coach Dani Newsome. “Dani Newsome has been one of my private volleyball coaches for years, and she’s always believed in me,” Faust said. “She’s so strong, and she knows how to get the best out of me.” That mentorship has helped shape Faust into a confident and disciplined player.
On the court, Faust embraces the competitive nature of her team. “We are very competitive,” she said, noting that the shared drive pushes everyone to improve. She also values chemistry among her teammates. “I love how well we play together and how easily we all click,” she said.
Faust highlighted several teammates who stood out in different ways. She named Roxie Griesemer as the team’s top setter and Ava Etheredge as the player most willing to sacrifice her body for a dig. Giovanna Jelsing, she added, is “always been the biggest cheerleader on the team,” helping maintain energy and encouragement during matches and practices.
While the team maintains focus in the gym, Faust said the bond among players remains strong. That connection is especially important in challenging environments, such as matches against Holland Hall. “The student section is very loud,” she said, describing it as the toughest place to play.
Off the court, Faust enjoys quieter activities like reading and painting, balancing the intensity of athletics with creative outlets. In the classroom, she favors forensics and named Rachel Skalnik as her favorite teacher.
Faust believes volleyball has taught her lessons that extend beyond sports, particularly the importance of teamwork. As she looks ahead, she carries those lessons with her, both on and off the court.
When it comes to her playing style, Faust prefers a jump serve. “It has more power behind it,” she said, reflecting her aggressive and driven approach to the game.
