Clay McKinney’s journey in cross country began in the 6th grade, a family tradition that required everyone to compete in at least one season. What started as a rule soon became a passion, and by 8th grade McKinney discovered a challenge he loved.

“The thing I love about competing in cross country is the journey that builds up to the competition,” McKinney shares.

His inspiration comes from home. McKinney’s dad ran in college at Southwest Baptist University and competed in many Ironman races. “I have always looked up to his dedication and training,” he reflects.

In recent years, McKinney has developed what he calls the “Aretonyx Method,” which focuses on small daily improvements to build both physical and mental strength. “To become mentally resilient, it takes a dedication deeper than just motivation,” says McKinney. “For me, it’s been about making every single day count.”

Progress is consistent for McKinney, and this season his goals include chasing a sub 14:35 5K and qualifying for the Nike Cross Nationals. “I’ve been training consistently year-round for a while now and I believe that I can make these goals happen,” says McKinney. “I’m determined to get it done.”

His supporters are vast, and McKinney has no doubt that with his friends, family, and coaches beside him, he is destined for great things. “I am very blessed to have an amazing team that rallies around me and supports my journey,” he adds. “My coaches and teammates are right beside me each and every day, cheering me on and helping me through every tough workout.”

With hefty goals for this season, McKinney stays true to his faith. “There is no greater purpose than glorifying the Lord,” he shares. “I try to remind myself that running is a gift from him, and all I can do is my best to bring glory to his name.”

For McKinney, it all comes back to the phrase that drives him most: everyone wants the view, but no one wants the climb. “It’s a little crazy, but I want the climb.” Because for him, the climb has always been the best part of the journey.
