VYPE Magazine Announces the Shelter Insurance Mr. & Miss Basketball Oklahoma Award Winners: Jalen Montonati from Owasso and McKenzie Mathurin from Broken Arrow

Tulsa, OK (April 10th, 2025) – VYPE Magazine and Shelter Insurance are proud to announce the 2024-25 Mr. and Miss Basketball Oklahoma Award winners are Jalen Montonati from Owasso High School and McKenzie Mathurin from Broken Arrow High School

The Shelter Insurance Mr. and Miss Basketball award recognizes the outstanding efforts Montonati, and Mathurin gave this season. Montonati and Mathurin join a distinguished list of players named to the top honor in the state of Oklahoma. 

During the 2024-25 season, Montonati averaged 23.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game. Montonati helped the Rams to the Class 6A state tournament. Montonati is nationally ranked in the top 10 for the class of 2026. Montonati is the second player from Owasso High School to win the award and the first player since Trae Young to win back-to-back Mr. Basketball awards. 

The five finalists for the 2024-25 Shelter Insurance Mr. Basketball Oklahoma award were Jalen Montonati – Owasso, Cal Furnish – Crossings Christian, Jacques Mitchell – Booker T. Washington, Jett Mueggenborg – Okarche, and Davon Scott – OKC Douglass.

This season McKenzie Mathurin was instrumental in helping Broken Arrow to the state semifinals. Mathurin averaged 23.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 2.8 assists per game. Mathurin is committed to the University of Michigan. Mathurin is the second player from Broken Arrow High School to win the award. Toree Thompson won the award in 2013-14.

The five finalists for the 2023-24 Shelter Insurance Miss Basketball Oklahoma award were McKenzie Mathurin – Broken Arrow, Keeley Parks – Norman, Kyiah Prestridge – Westmoore, Allyssa Parker – Pocola, and Henley West – Hammon.
