Berryhill’s Bentleigh Wood

Berryhill High School freshman Bentleigh Wood already understands what varsity softball demands: trust, toughness and the willingness to keep working when the game gets hard. A member of the Berryhill High School varsity softball team, Wood has embraced that challenge early and has become a player who values connection as much as competition. “I love how we all push each other to be our best and we have a great connection,” Wood said.

That team-first mindset helps explain why varsity softball means so much to her. For Wood, wearing Berryhill colors is about more than innings and box scores. It is about representing her school while playing in front of people who believe in the program and the athletes wearing the uniform. “It’s special because I get to represent my school and I get to be surrounded by teammates, coaches and a community that supports me,” Wood said.

She said one of her biggest strengths is hitting, though she is still focused on improving the finer points of her approach at the plate.

“My strength is probably hitting; I’m working to stay more consistent at the plate and have a better approach,” Wood said.

That drive to improve comes from the example she sees at home. Wood said her father has been a major influence because of the way he handles challenges and continues pushing forward. “My dad inspires me because he always works hard, and he’s never given up just because something’s hard,” Wood said. “He’s also taught me to believe in myself and to never give up.”

Wood has also been shaped by her travel ball experience. She said her team, The Ones, helped restore her confidence and joy for the sport during a difficult stretch. “They’ve always made me feel welcome and like I belong,” Wood said. “Being on this team helped me love the game again when I felt like giving it up.”

As she continues her high school career, Wood has her eyes on a future that stretches beyond Berryhill. She hopes softball will stay part of that path. “I would like to play college ball and continue my education,” Wood said.
