As the slow-pitch softball season gets in full swing, we caught up with Sand Springs freshman Lexi Penner to get her thoughts on playing at the varsity level and what she loves about the sport and her teammates.
VYPE: Lexi, what age did you start playing softball?
Lexi Penner: I started playing at six.
VYPE: What position are you playing?
LP: I’m a right-handed pitcher and I play first base.
VYPE: What skill are you best at and what have you worked to improve this season?
LP: Teamwork, communication, and leadership. My communication has probably improved the most.
VYPE: What do you love most about playing at CPHS?
LP: The coaches are understanding and help build your confidence.
VYPE: Do you play both slow and fastpitch softball? Does playing both help you?
LP: Yes, this was my first year of slow-pitch and I prefer fastpitch ALL the time! The thing I work on the most in slow-pitch is fielding so I get better when it comes to fastpitch.
VYPE: What does the support you get from your coaches, fans and parents mean to you?
LP: It means everything to me, and I appreciate their support.
VYPE: How do you mentally prepare for competition?
LP: I mentally prepare by listening to music and mentally visualize the game.
VYPE: What do you love most about your teammates?
LP: Their sense of humor.
VYPE: It’s early, but what are you plans after high school?
LP: I plan to attend college.
VYPE: Who inspires you?
LP: Jordy Bahl inspires me the most.
VYPE: What is your favorite accomplishment in softball thus far?
LP: Hitting the ball over the fence at the Colorado Sparkler Tournament in 2024.
