Bixby’s Sam DeWoody
Football is a contact sport and Sam DeWoody loves it that way. His job as an offensive guard is to move defenders to create running lanes. “My favorite part about football is hitting people as hard as I can,” he says.
Sam is a senior at Bixby High School. While his job on the field is all about hard hits and physical strength, Sam represents his school with pure sportsmanship. “My favorite part about representing my high school as an athlete is to be as polite, kind and respectful in public settings as possible,” he says, “to give a good rep toward my school.”
Playing football taught Sam to work hard and be disciplined in every aspect of life. “Not letting other people’s doubts stop me from accomplishing what I want to achieve,” he says, is another skill football gave him.
Brody Duffel is a teammate who left a big impression during Sam’s sophomore year. “He had a large, positive influence on me and is the reason I wanted to commit to playing offensive line,” said Sam. One of the best parts of life is getting to play the sport he loves with his best friends and teammates.
“I’m passionate about football because I’ve been playing for as long as I can remember. I was born and raised in a football family. I first started playing football in second grade because my dad very much wanted to see me play his favorite sport growing up.
“My dad inspires me because his accomplishments in life showcase how hard work pays off. My brother also inspires me to never let my foot off the gas. I would like to say thank you to my mom for being so amazing and supportive of me,” said Sam.
Beating Owasso in last year’s state championship is the best game he has ever been a part of. The 43-42 overtime victory by a two-point conversion is one he will never forget.
His favorite teacher is Mrs. Butler from fourth grade. He remembers her as being kind and entertaining. Eighth grade physical science is the class he liked the most. “We spent the last month of school building marble roller coasters,” he recalls fondly.
Sam loves to play pickleball in his free time. Disney World is his most memorable vacation destination. “It had a magical and nostalgic setting and was some of the most fun I’ve ever had.”
Sam plans to attend the University of Oklahoma, majoring in finance and accounting.
