Kiefer High School’s John Watkins
Being a team player and someone his teammates can count on is important to John Watkins. Now in his senior season, Watkins is focused on helping his team win and giving the underclassmen a positive example of what it takes to be a great teammate and competitor on the field.
His passion for the sport and his teammates is obvious when you watch Watkins play.
“The thing I love the most about my team is how we all act as a brotherhood. I also love the way everyone has each other’s backs. And how everyone picks each other up when someone is down,” said Watkins.
A four-year starter on the offensive line and a three-year starter on the defensive line, Watkins has played on teams with a combined record of 32-7. His expectation for this season hasn’t changed since his career at KHS started.
“My expectation for this season is to become district champions and make a deep run into the playoffs to win the state championship,” said Watkins.
Watkins said he draws inspiration from a close family member.
“My dad is the person that inspires me. He teaches me about respect, he is also the hardest working person that I know,” said Watkins.
The senior said his favorite subject in school is History and his favorite teacher is also a coach at KHS. Away from school, Watkins enjoys doing things that keep him in the great outdoors.
“My favorite subject in school is history and my favorite teacher is Coach Richard Duncan,” Watkins said. “I also belong to the National Honor Society, and what I enjoy doing in my free time is going to church and doing activities also hunting, fishing, and hanging out with family and friends.”
As a team, the Trojans have put in a lot of work and are ready to take on another tough schedule. Watkins said he looks forward to competing.
“My favorite opponent to play would have to have been Victory Christian,” Watkins said. “The team does a lot of training in the offseason we lift, run, and do football almost every week in the summer. Other sport that I do is powerlifting. What gets me motivated the most to play is just my love for the sport. Also just want to go out and hit other people.”
Once his time at KHS comes to an end, Watkins plans to work in law enforcement.
“After I graduate, I want to go be a jailer at a local jail and then become a Creek County Sheriff,” said Watkins.
