When coach Lynne Gorman talks about the Union swim team and specifically the girls team, one thing stands out; the team may be small, but they are hungry and ready to compete.
“I am excited to start the season with this small but mighty girls swimming team. Led by captains Hannah Nguyen (Sr.) and Sophia Vaught (So.), the girl’s team is racing very well in practice and setting a very high standard in the classroom,” coach Gorman said.
Returning varsity swimmers like Macie McClellan (Sr.) and Sophia Vaught (So.) are key components that help shape the program this season. McClellan enters her fourth year of varsity swim and is a three-time state qualifier and two-time individual state qualifier.
“Macie was awarded 2025 Top Performance of the Season; 2024 Horizon Award for excellence in leadership, spirit and character; and the 2023 Newcomer of the Year for her performances at conference, regional and state. Macie looks forward to racing in freestyle and butterfly events this season,” coach Gorman said.
Vaught brings the energy and work ethic in everything she does from swimming to the classroom. Coach Gorman said Vaught was a 2025 state relay swimmer last season.
“Sophia was awarded the 2025 Newcomer of the Year for her performances at the conference, regional and state meets. She was the 2025 Horizon Award winner for excellence in leadership, spirit and character. Sophia is looking forward to racing IM and freestyle events this season,” coach Gorman said.
Lorelei Almeida (Fr.) and Krissbel Domiter Sosa (So.) are ready to set personal bests and keep Union swim moving forward. Almeida has dedicated herself to making an impact this season and she is an active member of the pom team. Sosa enters her second season in the program and will compete in the butterfly and freestyle events. Also look for Kinsley Weddle (So.), alongside Sosa, lead the JV team with great energy and dedication.
The boys are starting the season with a full roster and coach Gorman said the team is loaded with strong swimmers.
“I am excited to start the season with a boys team full of strong swimmers and high performing students. Led by captains Trent Knight (Sr.) and Levi Dickerson (So.) the swimmers have been setting personal bests at practice and are looking forward to the competitive season beginning in November. Returning varsity swimmers Connor Hall (Jr.), Dustin Allen (Sr.), Nick Reich (Sr.), and Cameron Jurgensen (Sr.) are working hard at practice which creates a great environment to help new and JV swimmers accelerate,” coach Gorman said.
Knight is in his fourth season of varsity swim and has been a captain for two seasons. A three-time state relay swimmer and two-time individual state qualifier, Knight was awarded the Most Outstanding Swimmer for his performance during the conference, regionals and state performances in 2024 and 2025.
Dickerson will likely compete in freestyle and breaststroke events, while Reich is preparing to race in the freestyle and butterfly events this season. Allen continues to bring his work ethic and appetite for achieving his goals to the pool. A Horizon Award winner for excellence in leadership, spirit and character, Allen will compete in the IM and freestyle races.
Joshua Tanner (Jr.) is a new member of the team and someone who could be an X-factor this season. Tanner has been consistent throughout the summer and will likely race freestyle and butterfly events.
