Webster High School junior sprinter and hurdler Patience Pitts has emerged as one of the cornerstones of the Lady Warriors’ track and field program, but coaches say her greatest strides have come away from the stopwatch.
Pitts will compete in the 200 meters, 100-meter hurdles, 4×100 relay and long jump this spring, events that showcase her blend of speed, explosiveness and focus. “My biggest improvement this season is my mindset, my focus and consistency,” Pitts said. “I’ve been working harder to feel more confident in my skills.”
Her coach said that growth shows up every day in practice, where she has become a tone-setter for the rest of the varsity squad. That leadership is rooted in how she views the Lady Warriors. “I love how everyone at Webster has a bond and supports each other, not just during races but in practices too,” Pitts said.
The head coach said that chemistry is a big reason the program continues to move forward, noting that Pitts models how to compete hard while still lifting up teammates.
Pitts draws much of her drive from home. “My mom inspires me because she shows resilience every day,” she said. “No matter what challenges she faces, she keeps pushing forward and never gives up.”
Those lessons show when races get tough. “The most difficult thing about competing in track and field is pushing yourself to keep going even when you’re tired or don’t feel like you can do it,” Pitts said. “It’s hard to stay motivated and give your best every time, but that’s also what makes it worth it.”
Away from the track, Pitts stays busy as a cheerleader and member of student council and says history is her favorite subject, with Mr. Hughes her favorite teacher. She enjoys doing hair in her free time because it lets her be creative and “make people feel good about themselves.”
Whether she is sprinting, studying or styling, Pitts said the sport that ties it all together has given her tools she will carry well beyond high school. “Track has taught me discipline, teamwork and how to push through challenges,” she said. “I know these lessons will help me in school, work and life later on.”
