Kiefer High School’s Ryder Stephens is only a sophomore, but the baseball utility man already carries himself with the maturity of a seasoned veteran for the Trojans. Grounded by faith and driven by his family’s support, he is carving out a reputation as a hard worker who embraces every role he is given.
“My family, for sure,” Stephens said when asked who inspires him most. “They give me the tools and support I need to chase my dreams. They always remind me to never give up. Most importantly they taught me to put all my faith and trust in God, and he will guide me through life.”
On the field, Stephens does a little bit of everything as a utility player, a role he has learned demands toughness as much as talent. “The toughest part is staying mentally and physically sharp even with inconsistent playing time,” he said. “It’s a high-pressure role that requires a lot of mental focus. We’re not just backups; we’re on-field problem solvers.” That mindset fits perfectly with his favorite unwritten rule of baseball: respect the game and never step on the foul lines.
Stephens said the best part of playing for Kiefer is the bond inside the dugout. “It’s all about the brotherhood and the hype in the dugout. Making memories with the team while cheering each other on is the best part,” he said. He added that extra time together has helped turn teammates into close friends and created relationships that extend well beyond the field.
In the classroom, Stephens’ favorite subject is English, and he gives credit to his all-time favorite teacher, Mrs. Ernst, for making an impact on him. Away from school and baseball, he stays busy doing what he loves most: practicing his game or going outdoors to hunt and fish. At the plate, he knows exactly what he is looking for — a fastball, high and inside, is his favorite pitch to turn on.
Whether he is moving around the diamond, bringing energy to the dugout or grinding through extra reps, Stephens is using baseball to build skills he will carry for life, including discipline, resilience, teamwork and time management.
