For most high school freshmen, stepping onto a varsity soccer field can be intimidating. But for Glenpool High School’s Payton Willhite, it became an opportunity to prove herself.
Now a sophomore, Willhite has established herself as a versatile force for the Lady Warriors, playing defensive midfielder, attacking midfielder and outside back. Her freshman year success — earning all-district honorable mention recognition as a first-year varsity starter — set the foundation for what promises to be an impressive high school career.
“I’m most proud of learning a new position starting my freshman year, and then becoming a varsity starter and being rewarded with being named all-district honorable mentions as a freshman,” Willhite said.
The sport has shaped more than just her athletic abilities. For Willhite, soccer serves as a classroom for life lessons that extend far beyond the field.
“Soccer has taught me some of my most valuable lessons and one of the many reasons I am the person and player I am today,” she said. “Playing soccer has made me more confident, more disciplined, and more understanding of what it means to be part of a team. I’ve learned that growth comes from effort, mistakes are part of learning, and attitude matters just as much as talent.”
Behind every successful athlete stands a support system, and Willhite credits her parents as her primary source of inspiration. Their unwavering belief has fueled her determination to excel.
“I’m inspired most by my parents because they’ve always pushed me to be the best version of myself while still reminding me to stay true to who I am,” Willhite said. “Their constant belief in me motivates me to keep working hard and chasing my goals.”
On the field, teammate Kaylen Stephens has played an equally important role in Willhite’s development as both a player and person.
“Kaylen Stephens has left the biggest impression on me because she’s been one of my biggest supporters since my freshman year,” Willhite said. “Not only is she an amazing teammate, but she’s also one of my closest friends.”
As Willhite continues her high school career, she draws inspiration from U.S. Women’s National Team player Crystal Dunn, whose versatility and fearlessness mirror qualities Willhite strives to embody on the field.
With two more years ahead of her at Glenpool, Willhite’s combination of talent, work ethic and coachability suggests the Lady Warriors have a special player in their ranks.
