Union’s Tate Chavez – Golf Team – Presented by Joshua Moore, Shelter Insurance

Union’s Tate Chavez

As a freshman on the Union High School boys golf team, Tate Chavez already carries himself like a veteran on the course. He wears the Redhawks logo with pride, calling himself a “Union lifer” who sees golf as the perfect way to represent the school he has grown up in.

Chavez, a varsity golfer for Union, has been playing the sport for three years but has quickly embraced both its challenges and rewards. “What I love about my team is we have a good time and don’t give up,” he said, emphasizing the blend of camaraderie and competitiveness that defines the Redhawks program. For a ninth grader, that balance of fun and focus has helped him find his place among older teammates.

Golf, Chavez admits, can be unforgiving. “The toughest part of golf is the bad shot that you have to come back from and keeping your composure,” he said. Learning to reset after a mistake has become a central lesson in his young career, one he knows will matter deep into tournaments and, he hopes, beyond high school.

Much of his mindset comes from home. “My dad inspires me because he was the person that got me into golf and has helped me the most throughout the time I have been playing,” Chavez said. That support, along with guidance from coaches, has shaped his approach on and off the course.

One mentor in particular has left a mark. “Nathan Brown left an impression on me because he has helped me on and off the course taught me important this about the game of golf,” Chavez said, noting how those lessons extend to preparation, attitude and respect for the game.

Chavez’s goals stretch beyond local tournaments and high school seasons. “If all works out well, I would like to play college golf,” he said. For now, he is focused on steady improvement and helping Union contend, enjoying a sport he loves while representing a school that feels like home.
