Bixby’s Avery Walker – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Bob Chaney Steel Construction

Avery Walker remembers the thrill of reaching the state championship as a sophomore. Now, as a junior forward for the Bixby High School Lady Spartans varsity soccer team, she’s determined to return.

“I am most proud of making it to the state championship my sophomore year,” Walker said.

That deep playoff run shaped Walker’s approach to the game and reinforced lessons that extend beyond the pitch. Soccer has become more than competition for the junior forward — it’s a classroom for life skills.

“My sport has taught me to be self-disciplined and to work well with a team,” Walker said.

Those lessons come partly from watching others. Walker credits teammate Sadie Trotter with showing her what it means to be an exceptional teammate.

“Throughout the years of being on the same team she has taught me what it looks like to be better teammate, and she always pushes me to be my best,” Walker said.

Walker’s drive also stems from family. Her father’s work ethic has left a lasting impression on the junior athlete.

“My dad inspires me the most because he works very hard and he has always pushed me to be a better person and athlete,” Walker said. “My dad has always told me that it’s important to work hard because that is one thing you can always control.”

That philosophy extends to her academic life at Bixby, where Coach George has made an impact during her junior year.

“He helps me be a better student and he makes class fun,” Walker said.

For Walker, wearing the Bixby uniform carries responsibility. She takes pride in representing her school both on the field and in the classroom.

“My favorite part about representing Bixby is working hard for my teammates and pushing each other in the classroom as well,” Walker said.

As the season progresses, Walker remains focused on team success while acknowledging those who’ve supported her journey.

“I want to say thank you to my parents for always sacrificing a lot for my soccer career and always being my biggest supporters,” Walker said. “I also want to say thank you to my high school coach Mike for believing in me and making me a better player.”

With another season ahead, the junior forward continues building on the foundation established during that memorable sophomore championship run, guided by hard work and the support of family, coaches and teammates.
