Sapulpa Chieftains Baseball

Is there anything better than the start of baseball season? Not for the players under head coach Steven Irvine Jr.

This season the Chieftains are making their return to Class 6A play after a successful run in Class 5A. Coach Irvine said the team has some players to replace, but he’s excited to see what this group can accomplish.

“Returning back to 6A in 2025. Looking to build on our 5A success after three straight trips to state and take the next step against Oklahoma’s best. We return several young contributors from 2024 season but replacing two All-Staters will be tough,” said coach Irvine.

Tyler Sparks (So.) made a big impact last season in his first year of varsity play. Coming into the new season, Sparks is expected to have a big year playing second base and pitching. Sparks will likely be in the middle of the batting order giving the team a hitter who can get on base and move baserunners.

Another player who started as a freshman was Jensen Penn (So.). Penn went 7-1 last year from the bump and through 45 innings pitched Penn struck out 60 with an ERA of 1.09.

“We expect him to build on that early success and lead our pitching staff this spring,” said coach Irvine.

Brysen Donnell (Jr.) will likely lead Sapulpa in hitting and play centerfield this season. Don’t be surprised if he sees time on the mound. Donnell brings excellent speed to the outfield and on the bases. Kason Ashton (Sr.) is another player to watch when he’s playing shortstop. A defensive standout for the Chieftains, Ashton makes playing short look easy. As a junior, Ashton carried a .346 batting average with 37 hits, 22 RBIs and 11 stolen bases.

“Ashton makes the routine play consistently and has worked to make himself a steady offensive contributor as well,” said coach Irvine.

Also look for Aaron Roberts who puts team before self and is likely to see time at catcher and pitcher this season. A run producer, Roberts will hit in the middle of the lineup.

The new schedule will be a challenge, but this group is looking forward to proving they belong on the field and are willing to compete against anyone.
