Tulsa Edison’s Luis Ortiz

Tulsa Edison junior Luis Ortiz started playing soccer when he was eight years old. Now a member of the varsity soccer team at Edison High School, Ortiz is ready for another great season on the pitch.

“My goal for this season is to win another state championship and make it the sixth championship in Edison’s history,” said Ortiz.

Going back-to-back is never easy, but Edison does have a history of going back-to-back-to-back in ’92, ’93, and ’94. Ortiz has worked hard with his teammates to make it a reality.

“My strengths are my ability to retain possession, my defensive work rate, and my technical ability. I have drastically improved my leadership skills on the field by being more vocal and helping my teammates,” Ortiz said. “Christian Ojeda left a major impact on my high school career. When I was a freshman, he took me under his wing and guided me through my freshman and sophomore years.”

Ortiz said the team is mentally tough and physically ready to take on a tough schedule.

“I’m super proud of winning the first state championship in 30 years in Edison’s history. It’s such a huge accomplishment for the team and the school,” Ortiz said. “They’re my second family. They’re always there for me, on the field and off. The culture each of my teammates brings to the team makes it special, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.”

The junior said he is inspired by his dad and hopes to one day play soccer at the next level. For now, Ortiz and the Eagles are staying mentally and physically tough with one goal in mind, a state title.

“I like to clear my head, pray, and visualize what I’m going to do in the game. Finally, I take a deep breath, enjoy the moment, and most importantly, have fun,” said Ortiz.
