Webster Lady Warrior’s Volleyball
As head coach Kirk Baker and the Lady Warriors get deeper into their schedule, the team appears to be picking things up and looking forward to getting on the court and competing.
The Class 3A Warriors had the likes of Class 5A Edison early in the season and a trip to the Hulbert Tournament where they faced Salina and Sperry. Although the outcome wasn’t what the team wanted, they did learn a lot about themselves and were eager to get back on the court against McLain, which they won in three straight sets, 3-0.
Coach Baker said the team is young and improving.
“We are excited about the upcoming season returning three seniors and having over 40 girls sign up for volleyball. Izzy Oxford was a Green Country All-Conference team selection last season and as a senior, she will be our leader this year. Melissa Hon is another senior leader that will be a playmaker for us this season,” said Baker.
Oxford has shown to be an outstanding all-around athlete and an excellent volleyball player. Oxford is an excellent hitter and an elite passer. Her court IQ is another reason she stands out amongst her peers. Coach Baker said she’s also a great teammate.
“Izzy is a great kid and a fun teammate to have on the floor. The team respects her and looks up to her for guidance,” said Baker.
The future of the program could be in the hands of Trinity Merritt, a freshman libero. Merritt is extremely talented and loves the game.
“She is the kind of player that shows up early and then we have to kick her out at the end of practice. She hustles like no other player we’ve had in the past 10 years. She is excellent at playing digs and is a spot-on passer,” said Baker.
With big games looming on the schedule, the Lady Warriors are embracing the challenge. The TPS All-City Tournament will take up several dates in September.
