Bixby’s Rooney Vang
Bixby junior Rooney Vang has learned that some of the most important breakthroughs in soccer happen long before the scoreboard reflects them. As a versatile contributor for the Spartans, Vang lines up primarily at midfield and fullback, roles that demand both composure and grit.
One of his favorite memories came when Bixby won a tournament in Enid, a run he capped by scoring his first goal for the school. The moment was validated after years of work and a reminder that persistence pays off. “It taught me how to be patient and calm at the hardest times, and how to power through things when you’re at your lowest,” Vang said.
That mindset carries over from the classroom, where former English teacher Mrs. Pollack left a lasting mark. Vang admired the way she approached each day with enthusiasm and care. “She was nice and loved to teach and showed passion like how I do in soccer,” he said, noting she had to step away because of illness.
At home, Vang leans on his father, who he says challenges him to grow as both a player and a person. On the field, he points to teammate and close friend Samuel Portilla as a friendly rival who keeps practices competitive. “We are good buddies and we push each other to be the best,” Vang said.
Vang takes pride in “playing for the badge,” embracing what it means to represent Bixby every time he pulls on the jersey. “You’re representing your school and the people and showing why your school is great,” he said. He also carries a favorite piece of advice into each match: “If you’re scared, then do it scared, because that’s when you find out things about yourself that you never knew about.”
He credits his coaches for constantly believing in him and shaping the player he is becoming, and he models his game and loyalty after Tottenham and South Korea star Heung-Min Son. “He’s one of my favorite players and he’s one of the reasons I started playing,” Vang said. “I love his loyalty.”
