Kevin “Rowdy” Brown doesn’t get the luxury of focusing on just one side of the field.
As the center midfielder for Charles Page High School’s varsity soccer team, Brown serves as the engine that drives the Sandites’ attack while also protecting their defense. It’s a demanding role that requires constant movement, tactical awareness and the ability to influence every phase of play.
“I play center-mid, the toughest thing about playing that position is that you have to help every aspect of the game defense, offense, and generating chances,” Brown said.
The position suits Brown’s technical abilities, which he considers the strongest part of his game. His skill with the ball allows him to dictate tempo and create opportunities for teammates while maintaining defensive responsibility. But Brown recognizes that individual talent alone doesn’t make a complete player.
“My strength would be my technical ability, I am working on becoming more of a leader for the team,” he said.
That leadership development reflects lessons Brown has learned from his parents, who he credits as his primary inspiration.
“My parents just because they always push me to be a better version of myself,” Brown said.
The commitment to self-improvement extends beyond the soccer field. Brown takes classes at Huntington Learning Center, including ACT tutoring and subject-specific assistance when needed. He appreciates the support system there, noting, “How the teachers want to see me succeed and get better.”
In the classroom, Brown gravitates toward history, finding it his favorite subject at Charles Page. What makes representing the Sandites particularly meaningful for Brown is the personal connection to the community.
“Just being able to be a part of where I was born and raised,” he said.
Brown values the camaraderie within the team, describing a group dynamic where everyone contributes to the culture.
“The friendship we all have and how we support each other,” Brown said when asked what he loves most about his teammates. “I think the team as a whole is vocal not one player. I also think since the team is together, we all make each other laugh and bring each other up.”
Through athletics, Brown has gained qualities that extend beyond competition.
“Athletics have taught me to be disciplined and to be committed,” he said.
