OUTLOOK
A first-round exit in last year’s state tournament has motivated the Cardinals coming into the new season. Head coach Todd Anderson likes what he sees from his team as they prepare for another tough schedule and a possible run at the state tournament.
“Collinsville returns 3 starters from a State Tournament team that lost in the first round to the eventual state champion Midwest City. The Cardinals will rely on tough defense and a disciplined offense led will be led by four seniors,” said coach Anderson.
Those seniors include point guard Aiden Anderson (5-10) who averaged 12 points a game with 5.0 assists and Austin Normanndin (5-11) at guard who averaged 10 points and 5.0 assists per contest.
“Senior guard Aiden Anderson is a three-year starter and 1st team All-District selection who shot above 40 percent from three-point range last year. Senior guard Austin Normanndin will continue to make an impact for the Cardinals slashing to the basket and helping handle opponent’s pressure,” said Anderson.
Kane Abshire (6-5) at forward who accounted for 7.0 points and 5.0 rebounds a game while Walton Cavanagh (6-2) went for 3.0 points and 3.0 rebounds a game.
“ ”“Abshire is a 6-foot-5 post who is a strong presence in the paint who can stretch the defense with his ability hit from three-point range. Senior Walton Cavanagh is the glue that keeps us strong. Walton has a nose for the ball and is one of our best competitors,” said Anderson.
One player you can expect to make an impact this season is Dylan Scyrkels (6-3, Jr.) at guard. Scyrkels can be a matchup problem for opponents at guard and gives the team another player who is defensive minded. Jarret Bristol (6-2, Jr.) adds depth at the guard spot and gives coach Anderson options when game planning opponents.
Other players to watch include Cal Schlomann (5-11, Jr.) at guard, Payton Gall (5-11, Jr.) at guard, Maverick Davis (6-2, Jr.) at guard, Austin Boren (6-1, Jr.) at forward, Brevin Walters (6-1, So.) at guard, Kyler Lee (5-11, So.) at guard, and Kade Lee (5-11, So.) at guard.
The tournament schedule consists of trips to Inola, McAlester, and Carl Albert before post season play begins on February 25th.
