VYPE: Cody, what grade are you in, what position are you playing and when did you start playing basketball?
Cody Dearing: I’m in the 11th grade a junior and I’ve been playing basketball since I was in the 2nd grade. I play a mix of positions here at Skiatook. I play point guard, shooting guard, and when needed small forward.
VYPE: What are your strengths and what have you improved on the most this season?
CD: My strength in the game would have to be my shooting. I’ve always been a great shooter but this year I’ve really focused on working harder at it and shooting the ball with precision and speed.
VYPE: Which teammate have you been impressed with this season?
CD: I have been impressed with the whole team really and the dedication we have to show up and put the work in and I feel like Julian Baldino on the team really sets that tone for going out and putting the work in and motivating us to work harder.
VYPE: What makes Skiatook HS a great place to be a student-athlete?
CD: SHS is a great place for me. All of my teammates are the most fun guys to hang around. I came from being homeschooled throughout my middle school years and elementary years until I went to high school my freshman year so I didn’t know anyone at Skiatook but the guys on the team accepted me instantly and made it super easy for me.
VYPE: Tell me one of your favorite memories while competing for the Bulldogs?
CD: My favorite memories at Skiatook have been going out to eat with the team. We’d always go at least once a week after a summer open gym to Ron’s. It really has helped us build chemistry and play better together.
VYPE: Which teammate keeps everyone laughing and who is the most serious?
CD: If you want to have fun just hang out with the twins as we call them. Hunter Howell and Trevor Matthews are the funniest guys to hang around. If you want serious that would be Julian, he really focuses and doesn’t get too unserious at times but really all the guys on the team are funny at times.
VYPE: How do you mentally prepare yourself to compete?
CD: I get ready for my games by listen to some good ole country music and just calming done and stretching and getting myself loose.
VYPE: What do you love most about your team and teammates?
CD: I love the dedication and drive of my teammates everyone always is looking to get better and work hard each day. I’m a one athlete player I play basketball only and enjoy focusing on just that.
VYPE: What’s the goal for life after high school?
CD: My goal in life after high school is to go to college and get a degree and a good job to provide for my future family and just be a hardworking man and always striving for the Lord each day.
