Owasso’s Avery Williams

By Elizabeth Contreras

VYPE: What first drew you to golf, and when did you realize it was more than just a hobby?
Avery Williams:As a fourth grader, my family joined a golf course and that’s really where everything started. I began playing a lot with my dad. What began as quality time slowly turned into something I was truly passionate about.

VYPE: What part of your game do you take the most pride in right now?
AW: I take the most pride in my ability to bounce back. Resilience has become one of the strongest parts of my game.

VYPE: What was the biggest turning point in your development?
AW: The biggest turning point was deciding in seventh grade to truly commit. That commitment helped me grow in skill, confidence, and mental toughness.

VYPE: After a tough hole, how do you reset?
AW: My go-to saying is, “Be a goldfish.” There’s nothing I can do to change the past, so why dwell on it?

VYPE: What separates good golfers from great ones at the high school level?
AW: It comes down to mindset and intentional practice. Great golfers stay mentally steady when things aren’t going their way, and they practice with clear purpose instead of just going through the motions.

VYPE: Golf is individual, but you’re part of a team. What does that mean to you?
AW: Even though I’m the only one hitting my shots, my score contributes to something bigger than just me. I’m playing for my teammates too.

VYPE: Who has had the biggest impact on your growth?
AW: My dad. From the beginning, he was out there with me, turning long rounds into some of my favorite memories. He taught me that bad shots are part of the game and that staying positive matters more than being perfect.

VYPE: What’s an underrated skill in golf?
AW: Emotional control. People see the long drives and clutch putts, but they don’t always see the discipline it takes to manage frustration and nerves.

VYPE: What’s driving you this season?
AW: Going to state is my biggest goal, especially during my senior year as team captain. I want to lead by example and help create an environment where we all believe we can get there together.
